Walking is better together. Here are 75 hiking clubs, walking groups and athletics clubs that welcome walkers across South Africa, plus the free Saturday-morning 5k that has made walking one of the country’s favourite weekend habits. Every club page was opened on 9 October 2026.
parkrun is a free 5 km event held every Saturday morning in parks across South Africa, about 230 of them. You can walk the whole way: there is no time limit, and a volunteer Tail Walker always finishes last, so nobody else does. In South Africa almost a third of the people who finish each week are walkers, the highest share of any parkrun country, and the average finish time is about 42 minutes.
Register once, free, at parkrun.co.za and bring your barcode on paper or your phone. Without it you can still walk, but you will not get a time.
Most South African events start at 8:00, some at 7:00 in hot areas. Check your event’s page.
Children can take part from age 4; under-11s stay within arm’s reach of an adult.
Dogs only where the event allows them, one per person on a short hand-held lead.
Walking poles are fine. Many events have a parkwalker, a volunteer who walks among the walkers to keep them company.
You can also volunteer: email your local event or speak to the team on the day.
From parkrun’s own websites, seen 9 October 2026. parkrun is a registered trade mark of parkrun; WalkWell4Life is not connected with parkrun.
